Technology Spotlight: CT Scan Streamlines Airport Security

Travelers who are used to combating the long lines and the annoying unpacking of their suitcases at airport security checkpoints may have relief with this new application of an existing technology.

CT scanners currently used by doctors to find disease and injury in their patients are being tested on suitcases and travel bags to aid security agents in finding potentially dangerous substances that their 2-D scanners miss. These scanners would eliminate most of the need for manual inspection.

Details of this promising 3-D scan application are featured in this week’s Technology Spotlight.
